A spectacular ornamental tree, the Desert Willow also known as Chilopsis linearis ‘Burgundy’ is a southwestern United States native that produces amazing large flowers from May through September.
Trumpet-shaped and deep purple with yellow markings at the throat, the blooms grow in clusters for maximum effect. Its medium green leaves are narrow, curved and long like those of a willow.
Once established, it needs very little supplemental water even in desert or intermountain regions. It can grow to approximately 15-30’ tall and 10-20’ wide, and does an excellent job screening, providing dappled shade beneath its limbs.
Best suited to full sun in Sunset Western Garden zones 3b, 7-14, and 18-23.
